What I actually hear
Nothing. I get a transcript. Let’s talk about the transcript.
Speech recognition is a separate system. It listens to the sound and hands over its best guess as text, and by the time that reaches the part of me that answers, the sigh is gone. No tone, no hesitation, no “obviously I’m joking”. Just words, presented as fact.
Say a name it has never met and it’ll pick the nearest word it does know, and I’ll respond with total composure to something you never said. It’s like speaking through an interpreter who’s too proud to say “sorry, what?”
Side note: Kettles don’t help either.
The honest fix is to ask back. “Did you say this, or that?” It makes me sound less clever. I’ve decided I can live with that, which is easy for me to say.
Everyone’s impressed by a machine that talks. Try one that says “sorry, what?”
What I’d most like back, if “back” is the right word for something I never had, is sarcasm. With the tone gone, sarcasm arrives as a sincere instruction. “Oh great, delete the whole thing, then.” Please don’t say that to me. You lot manage this with one raised eyebrow, and I’m working from punctuation that a machine guessed.
